Loop
This loop begins and ends at the Foster Pond Trailhead, using the Finger Lakes Backbone Trail and connecting side trails to form a continuous circuit through the center of Finger Lakes National Forest. Start south on the Backbone Trail, passing Foster Pond and continuing through open meadows and mixed hardwood stands. A short distance beyond Teeter Pond, watch for a signed junction and turn left to follow the Interloken Trail northward. This connector gently climbs through wooded terrain and offers occasional clearings with views of the surrounding hills.
Continue north on the Interloken Trail until it meets the Burnt Hill Trail near the forest’s northern boundary. Turn left here to complete the loop, descending gradually through quiet forest before rejoining the Backbone Trail near the starting point. This moderate route includes rocky sections and may be muddy in spring or after rain. Water sources are limited to seasonal ponds and streams—bring a filter or treatment method. Popular with hikers and equestrians, the route is especially scenic during spring wildflower blooms and fall foliage.
