There and Back
This route begins from a small pullout on Pluck Hill Road near Royalton, Vermont, and follows a well-marked trail system maintained by local conservation groups. The path climbs steadily through a mixed hardwood forest, gradually ascending to a high ridgeline dotted with moss-covered rock outcrops and boulders.
Rocky tread and moderate elevation gain make this route suitable for novice to intermediate hikers. In wet conditions, ledges can become slick, so use caution on exposed sections. Seasonal streams may flow along the lower trail but aren’t reliable for drinking water. The route returns to the original trailhead via a gentle descent through mature forest. Peak foliage in fall, spring wildflowers, and year-round woodland solitude make this a rewarding day hike in central Vermont.
