Mount Si

4.4 (127 Ratings)
Mount Si is one of the most-hiked trails in Washington State — a steep, relentless climb through old-growth Douglas fir that deposits you on a summit ridge with panoramic views of Puget Sound, the Seattle skyline, Mount Rainier, and the full sweep of the North Cascades. The trail is never technical, but it earns its reputation: 3,500 vertical feet in 4 miles is sustained and unforgiving regardless of fitness level. On clear days the summit is one of the great views in the Pacific Northwest. On weekends it is one of the great crowds.

Description
Mount Si begins at the Mount Si Trailhead (~741') on SE Mount Si Road in North Bend, Washington. From the trailhead, follow the Mount Si Trail north through second-growth and old-growth Douglas fir and western hemlock on a well-maintained, signed path. The trail climbs via sustained switchbacks through forest with minimal flat sections throughout. The grade eases briefly around 2,500' where the forest character shifts, then steepens again toward the summit ridge. The trail tops out on the broad rocky summit area at approximately 4,140', with views extending west to Puget Sound and the Olympic Mountains, south to Mount Rainier, and north to the North Cascades. The Haystack — the exposed rocky spire at the very summit — is an optional Class 3 scramble adding approximately 200 vertical feet; it is not required to enjoy the summit views and involves genuine exposure. Many hikers stop at the main summit area. Return on the same trail. Begin early on weekends — the trailhead parking lot fills before 8 AM year-round.
