There and Back
The Sand Dune Trail begins off Route 6 near Snail Road in the Province Lands section of Cape Cod National Seashore. This unmarked social trail climbs immediately into a rolling dune field. Hikers follow sandy ridgelines and open bowls toward the ocean. The route is not signed or regularly maintained, so careful navigation is important — aim for the low spot between dunes and keep the beach in sight when possible. About halfway, the route transitions to a wider roadbed and continues north to the beach. After a sustained climb and descent through soft sand, the trail reaches a quiet stretch of shoreline with expansive Atlantic views. Seals are sometimes visible just offshore.
This short route demands more effort than its distance suggests. The deep sand underfoot and complete lack of shade make sun protection, sturdy footwear, and ample water essential. Because this trail crosses a fragile dune ecosystem, stay on existing paths and check with the National Park Service for seasonal rules or wildlife closures. The open terrain and ocean payoff make it one of the most unusual day hikes in Cape Cod National Seashore.
