Loop
The Clapper Hollow State Forest Loop begins from the main parking area on Clapper Hollow Road and follows a series of interlinked trails through the heart of Clapper Hollow State Forest. From the trailhead, the route quickly enters mixed hardwood forest, climbing gently along old logging roads and footpaths. At early junctions, stay left to begin the main loop in a clockwise direction, where the trail passes through fern-covered clearings, crosses seasonal streams, and winds along low ridgelines. Occasional side trails offer opportunities to shorten or extend the route depending on time and conditions.
While elevation changes are moderate, some sections feature uneven footing, muddy patches, and dense understory growth. Wildlife sightings are common—especially wild turkey and white-tailed deer—and the area’s remoteness makes it ideal for those seeking solitude. During fall, hunters frequent the forest, so wearing bright clothing is strongly recommended. Snowshoeing is possible in winter, but deep snow or spring thaw can make travel slow. The route returns to the original trail after completing the loop, leading back to the Cottage Road trailhead. This quiet forest route offers a peaceful walk through classic upstate New York terrain.
