Description
The Big Field Trail begins at the Gosnell Big Woods Preserve parking area, just west of the main entrance. From the trailhead, the route enters dense hardwood forest typical of Minnesota’s remaining Big Woods habitat, following a well-maintained path that meanders through a mix of mature maple, oak, and basswood trees. About halfway in, the trail opens into several quiet meadow clearings that offer good birdwatching, especially in spring and fall migration seasons. At Y-intersections, stay right to remain on the main loop. This is a Class 1 trail suitable for novice hikers and is open year-round. Expect mud or snow cover in early spring and winter, and be aware of icy spots during freeze-thaw conditions. No reliable water sources exist along the route—plan to bring your own. Dogs are allowed on leash, but no fires or camping are permitted. The shaded trail and open fields offer a peaceful walk through varied terrain and seasonal wildlife activity.
