Loop
Starting from the parking area along Empire Boulevard (NY‑404) beside Lucien Morin Park, this route enters a broad network of unpaved trails tracing Irondequoit Creek and the surrounding wetlands. Trailheads lead into wooded terrain and marsh edges, with paths that wind through riparian forest, pass by bluffs, and offer frequent views of the water. Hikers can follow the Old Rifle Range Trail for a moderate circuit that loops through forested sections and past remnants of a former shooting range. The terrain is mostly natural surface—dirt with some roots, rocks, or gravel—and includes rolling ups and downs that become muddy and slick in wet conditions.
Navigation can be tricky in spots due to limited signage, so GPS or a map is recommended. Portions of the route approach the Irondequoit Bay outlet and connect with additional trail segments or access points, including the Irondequoit Bay State Marine Park. This area is especially popular for birding, with sightings of waterfowl and songbirds common along the wetlands. Expect minimal facilities, leash requirements for dogs, and variable trail conditions depending on the season. The combination of forest, water, and proximity to Rochester makes this one of the more accessible day hikes near Irondequoit Bay.
