Description
White Pine Lake is a subalpine lake in Northern Utah. Located in the Naomi Peak Wilderness in the Bear River Mountain Range, White Pine Lake Trail is a 7.8 mile there and back hike. It is a heavily trafficked trail due to it's close proximity to Logan, Utah. The trail is suitable for even the newest of hikers. It's fairly wide as it does allow horseback riding on the trail as well. It's situated in the middle of free ranging cattle land so, depending on the time of year, there will be cattle all over the certain parts of the trail. You start off in the parking lot of Tony Grove Lake. This is a popular destination in itself as kayaking, SUP, and swimming take place all around the lake. From the parking lot, the trail towards White Pine Lake sits at 8,020 feet and climbs to the north. After a few meadows, you reach the peak of the trail at 8,888 feet and you then begin to decend towards the basin that holds the lake. The decent is a slightly steeper grade so keep in mind that you will have to work a little harder on the way back out. Once you reach the lake, it is dominated by two mountain peaks on either side. Mount Gog to the north and Mount Magog to the south. Backcountry camping is available all around the lake as well and it is a popular choice for many. If you plan to backcountry camp, make sure you get there early enough to find a good spot and camp at least 200 feet away from the lake. The lake can get rather crowded for a typical backcountry camping experience. All in, the total elevation gain is 1,332 feet, making it a relatively easy to moderate hike. White Pine Lake Trail offers a good taste of high country hiking and subalpine scenery.
