Description
First Falls is accessible along the Big Pine Creek North Fork Trail, starting from the Big Pine Creek Recreation Area. This trail climbs approximately 1,068 feet over a 1.85-mile route, reaching a maximum elevation of 8,644 feet. The creek and its cascading falls are fed by glacial runoff from the Sierra Nevada, including the Palisade Glacier. The canyon is a popular destination for trout fishing, with Big Pine Creek and the upstream lakes providing ample angling opportunities. Along the trail, a shaded day-use area and a small backcountry campsite near the falls offer places to rest. Because the trail runs through a south-facing canyon, it can become quite warm during the day. Hikers should prepare for sun exposure, though Big Pine Creek provides a reliable water source for filtration. Nearby staging areas and overnight options include the Big Pine Creek Campground and Glacier Lodge, which features a store, restaurant, cabins, and campsites.
