Trail Overview
This route covers the portion of Forest Service Road 101(Sand Lake Road) from Highway 130 to the Deep Creek Campground. It is a scenic and easy drive through the eastern edge of Wyoming’s Medicine Bow National Forest. This gravel road is mostly two lanes wide and suitable for stock SUVs, passenger vehicles, and other high-clearance vehicles. The route winds through a mix of open meadows and lodgepole pine forest, providing a relaxing drive with views of the surrounding landscape. Numerous dispersed campsites are found along the road, making it an excellent choice as a base camp for exploring the Snowy Range. The gentle terrain and wide road surface make FS 101 a great option for those looking to enjoy the forest without technical obstacles. The road also provides access to additional Forest Service roads and opportunities for outdoor recreation.
History
The Medicine Bow National Forest was established in 1902 and has long supported timber harvesting, livestock grazing, and outdoor recreation. The nearby Snowy Range was carved by glaciers thousands of years ago, creating the granite peaks, alpine lakes, and broad valleys that define the landscape today.
