Trail Overview
Hobble Creek is a scenic, easy-going 22.3-mile route perfect for beginners, families, and seasoned offroaders looking for a relaxed drive through the spectacular Bridger-Teton National Forest. Rising from a starting elevation of 6,582 feet to a high point of 8,709 feet, this well-maintained dirt and gravel Forest Service road treats travelers to more than 2,500 feet of elevation gain. The trail leads deep into the forest, winding through expansive mountain meadows such as Big Park and Japanese Park, which offer incredible opportunities for wildlife viewing and photography. Most stock SUVs and trucks with high clearance will handle this route comfortably under dry conditions, making it highly accessible while still delivering immersive backcountry vistas.
With a technical rating of 3, the trail's primary challenge is the creek crossing, which features a solid concrete base for stable traction but can experience washouts or high waters during the spring snowmelt and mud season. Drivers of SxSs, dirt bikes, and four-wheel-drive vehicles will find plenty of camping spots along the way, including the Hobble Creek Campgrounds situated near the water. While the route is generally straightforward, carrying recovery gear and monitoring seasonal weather conditions is advised, as high-altitude dirt roads can become slick and muddy. The trail provides an ideal gateway for further exploration of the surrounding Wyoming backcountry and nearby mountain ranges.
