Trail Overview

Located within the Bridger-Teton National Forest, Elk Mountain is a seasonal trail, so be sure to check current access dates. This challenging single-track is defined by a steep ascent, featuring a few super tight switchbacks throughout the first mile before transitioning into a rugged expanse of loose shale. Above the treeline, stunning, panoramic views of the Grand Tetons and Prater Mountain. The route ultimately leads to the historic Elk Mountain fire lookout. Please help us preserve the site by keeping the area clean and refraining from adding any graffiti. This is a shared trail by hikers and horses.

Difficulty

This trail is exceptionally challenging until you reach the tree line. Only the last mile is flowy and has no elevation gain. Expect dry conditions with loose shale and rocky terrain, including several tight switchbacks. When ascending, take it slow.
