Custer Limestone Road

This road is smooth, scenic, and has just enough bends and rolls to keep it interesting. Custer Limestone is one of those quiet forest roads that wind through tall pine stands and cut across pockets of open limestone meadows. Nothing too technical here, just a solid backroad drive with plenty of spots to pull off and soak it in. A few dispersed camping pullouts can be found along the way, especially near the southern stretches. Not a lot of traffic, which makes it a good option if you're looking to post up somewhere peaceful for a night or two. Mule deer and turkeys are common out here, and during the fall, it sees light use from hunters glassing across the limestone benches. Geologically, this area is sitting right on top of the Minnekahta Limestone formation, a pale-pink band that shows up in road cuts and creek beds--it's a good indicator you're in classic southern Black Hills country. The drainage is clean, and the terrain stays open with good visibility. Pack in, pack out, leave no trace, and tread lightly. Hit me with the next one.
