Trail Overview
Bell Mound Trail is a scenic, stock-friendly forest route that winds through some of central Wisconsin’s classic pine and hardwood forests. The trail is primarily wide sandy two-track and graded forest roads with long stretches of packed sand, shallow ruts, and gentle curves. Most stock 4WD SUVs and trucks can complete the route in dry conditions without difficulty. Expect a relaxed drive with beautiful scenery rather than technical obstacles, making it an excellent choice for beginners, families, or anyone looking for a peaceful day exploring the woods. The primary challenge is the soft sand, which can become deeper in places and may require maintaining momentum, particularly for heavier vehicles or those running highway tire pressures. After periods of heavy rain, expect occasional washouts, standing water, and a few mildly off-camber corners, though none are especially technical. Narrow sections with overhanging vegetation may leave light pinstriping on full-width vehicles. Note that a short segment near the correctional facility is currently closed, but an easy highway detour reconnects you with the remainder of the trail. Overall, Blue Mound earns an Easy (2/10) rating and rewards travelers with quiet forests, sweeping sandy roads, and a relaxing drive that showcases the beauty of Wisconsin’s Northwoods.
Difficulty
Rated 2/10 primarily due to sections of soft sand that may require maintaining momentum, especially for heavier vehicles or those running full street tire pressure. The remainder of the route consists of wide sandy forest roads and two-track with gentle grades, minor off-camber corners, and occasional shallow washouts after heavy rain. Overhanging vegetation may cause light pinstriping in a few sections. Suitable for stock high-clearance 4WD vehicles in normal conditions.
