Trail Overview

Stoney Run (WV61) is a dirt and gravel road that more or less runs parallel to the trail to Reddish Knob. The trail is sufficiently wide enough for two vehicles to pass each other, and can easily be run in 2WD. The trail begins at county route 32 and descends into a valley before eventually ascending again as it heads towards Reddish Knob. There are numerous switchbacks as the trail meanders toward its eventual intersection with Reddish Knob Road.

Difficulty

The trail is mostly a gravel/dirt road. Some areas are rocky and there are a couple of shallow water crossings. Low-clearance vehicles such as passenger cars may have difficulty in those areas.

Stony creek is my favorite forest rd in this area. Starting from briery branch/reddish (k)nob rd the first few miles are rocky and there are a few small creeks to cross. One particularly bad wash out could become an issue for vehicles that don't have good approach and departure angles. After the shallow but rocky crossing the road gets more compacted and snakes through the side of the mountain with multiple switchbacks until coming to the end at Shenandoah mountain Rd.

we started from the south and ran up towards briery branch road. 3/4 of the trail is typical small rocky dirt forest road and is a great flowing drive. once you get to Stony run things get significantly more rocky and there is a pretty deep washout that could take off bumpers from vehicles with bad approach/departure angles. most of the trail is definitely 2/10 but a portion is 3/10 because of the road conditions and unavoidable washout.

There were a few downed trees towards the second half of the trail when going south to north. Most of the trees were small and I was able to use a handsaw to cut a path wide enough for a motorcycle. There was one large tree that we were able to ride under.

Came back to do the whole trail. Rocky. A few puddles, creek crossing and a side trail kept things semi interesting. Couple of camp sites. I'd recommend this trail if you wanna escape civilization for the day

Went about half way, but turned around because it was getting late and going the opposite direction I needed to. Lost of small rocks, will have to return.

Trail was open and clear. Lots of small rocks make for a bumpy ride, so I recommend airing down. The crossings were mostly dry. I only saw one other Jeep and a group of dual sport bikes. Camping is limited, just three spots I saw.

Lots of switch backs and is definitely a stony trail! The surface wasn't too uneven or rutted. There were a couple areas with a little bit of challenge, but overall wasn't too bad. Pretty sure I could not hit a skid even if I tried. I recommend this trail for a first timer / beginner.

Wide road and beautiful views, not very challenging, ran it in 2WD but still a lot of fun.

beautiful fsr that winds up and down the backside ridge of reddish knob on the west virginia side. the creek crossings were less than 12" and most the trail was groomed dirt and gravel with sections with exposed rock. quite a few small primitive campsites off the the main road.
