Trail Overview

Trail P83 starts at its south entrance with deeper ruts as it climbs beneath powerlines, including a couple of sharp switchbacks. It leads into an embedded rock shelf less than a foot tall that can be approached straight on and driven right up. The trail includes some deep, sloppy, muddy ruts that dirt bikes would be wise to stay out of. It narrows up as it winds through a forest of pines and comes to an intersection with P84, one of the hardest trails in the Pocahontas trail system. The northern half has big mud puddles before connecting with P18.

Difficulty

Although it has some steeper grades, sharper switchbacks, and a small rock shelf, the trail is not overly difficult, but is best suited for drivers with a moderate level of experience. Note that this is marked as Most Difficult by the trail system.

Ridden from north to south, the trail is currently very mild for a "black" trail. Midway through the trail there is a deeply rutted and wet area that could be tricky for UTVs, especially with open diffs or low suspension travel. For ATVs and dirt bikes, all of the other wet areas are very shallow and gravel bottomed, and the rutted wet area has many easier line choices available for >50in width vehicles. The last 30ft of the trail at the south end is a steep, technical rocky descent, which is only difficult if you attempt to climb it going south to north.
