Trail Overview

Willapa Hills is an easy, scenic 17.3-mile loop winding through lush commercial forestland in Pacific County, Washington, offering an accessible offroad experience for beginners and stock four-wheel-drive vehicles. This scenic route primarily consists of well-maintained gravel logging roads managed by the Washington Department of Natural Resources (DNR). The trail climbs from an elevation of 144 feet near the valley floor up to a maximum elevation of 1,991 feet, navigating gentle grades with an average gradient of just over 3 degrees. As the route snakes through dense stands of mature timber, it alternates with open clear-cuts that offer expansive views of the surrounding hillsides. It is an excellent route for high-clearance vehicles, SUVs, and SxSs looking for a relaxed, dirt-and-gravel drive with occasional mud puddles after rainfall. The route begins along Green Creek Road directly off Highway 6 outside Menlo and completes its loop by exiting onto Mill Creek Road, which connects back to the highway. Due to its status as active timberland, visitors should remain alert for active logging operations and washboards along the gravel surfaces. Offroaders can expect minimal to no cell service throughout the dense forest, with only brief reception possible at the highest ridgelines, making downloaded offline maps essential for navigation. A Washington Discover Pass is required for recreation on Department of Natural Resources lands, and all vehicles must be street-legal or possess appropriate permits.
