Trail Overview
Lower West Church is a single-lane 3-mile point-to-point gravel road that begins at a gated entrance and climbs through forested terrain via a series of switchbacks. The road traverses steep hillsides in places, with significant drop-offs along portions of the route. Several dispersed campsites can be found along the road, making it a popular destination for those seeking a quiet campsite away from more heavily traveled areas. The route ends at an intersection with West View and Upper West Church. Lower West Church is open from April 16th to December 24th to highway legal vehicles.
Difficulty
West Church is generally an easier route, though drivers should be comfortable with narrow mountain roads and occasional exposure to the steep drop-offs along the side of the trail. The gravel surface is typically straightforward, and the switchbacks are manageable for most vehicles. The primary challenge comes from the narrow road width and the feeling of exposure in certain sections, rather than any major obstacles. Weather conditions can increase difficulty, particularly when the road surface becomes slick. As with most trails in the area, bringing a chainsaw or equipment to clear fallen trees is recommended.
