Trail Overview
Larch Mountain L-1500 is located in the Yacolt Burn State Forest which encompasses 90,000 acres of forest in Southwest Washington. During the winter and spring, this area isn't advised for vehicle traffic as it is covered in snow. Late spring, summer and fall are the best times to enjoy this area. All of the roads in the Yacolt Burn State Forest are very well maintained with gravel and are easily accessible by low clearance vehicles. The start of the trail is called Four Corners and is a great area to air down before heading up the steep road. From there you will see a huge shooting range off to your left before heading toward the Thrillium Mountain Bike Trail which is located just off of L-1500. There is a nice parking area and map for hikers and mountain bikers. Larch Mountain sits at an elevation of 3,478 feet and the summit can be accessed on the Larch Mountain Trail located right next to the Thrillium Mountain Bike TH. There are pit restrooms in this area but no trashcans unfortunately so pack in and pack out rules apply. As you continue down the road you will find the Hagen Creek ORV Trail that's clearly marked and is specifically meant for dirt bikes only. There is dispersed camping but they are primitive with no running water or restrooms. Currently logging operations are being conducted in the area and signs are clearly posted where operations are occurring. As you wind through this scenic trail there are absolutely stunning views of the valley and surrounding areas. Finally, you will reach Jones Creek 4x4 Trail which is a very popular off-road trail for 4x4 vehicles of all kinds. The Discover Pass is required, although there are twelve free days a year for this area and can be purchased online. Yacolt Burn is home to many different species of flora and wildlife and the focus is conservation for Salmon, Spotted Owl, Marbled Murrelets and old growth forests.
