Trail Overview

Jump Off road is a 12-mile Forest Service road that crosses the Tieton River at Windy Point and climbs quickly up onto and follows along Divide Ridge to reach Jump Off Lookout. The first 3-4 miles were freshly graded and compacted but then the road devolved into the teeth-rattling basalt rock roads that are common in this area. Most of this road faces a Southern Exposure and is clear from snow by early June, but the remainder of the adjacent Divide Ridge road network and trail system is often snowbound until mid-July.

Started off dry, then wet. When you get to the top, it's snowy and icy, and very windy.

First time out on this trail. While not technical, it was slow going for me. As the description says, there are some larger rocks on the tracks. I did NOT reduce tire air for this, but you definitely could. My jeep is stock, no mods…YET. It was a perfect ride for beginners or easy trailing. Took me two hours from the road to get to the jump off tower one way. I saw one other jeep, an ATV and a Heifer. You really go through many terrain types and views on this trail, very divers. Heavily wooded, then desert like, Once getting to jump off tower, the view is just incredible! It literally brings you to your knees. You can park right on the cliff side at one point. It feels like you’re at the end of the world, in the BEST way. I thoroughly loved this trail. After I returned back to the main road I went through Chinook pass on my way home and watched the sun set there…so much beauty and feelings in 12hrs, behind the wheel of my jeep!

Trail seems to be open again but I did not make it very far past the entrance. Ice and snow covered the trail early on. I ended up turning around after a quarter mile as it was already dark and all up-hill in the ice. I slid a little bit on the ice on the way back down but nothing too bad. I wont be back here until the snow melt in the spring.

I called the Naches Ranger Station and they said the trail will likely be reopened on 10/31.

Easy trail up to the Jump Off Fire Lookout. This is the last fire lookout in Yakima county. It is maintained by a volunteer group. The trail is mainly chunks of basalt, so it is best to air down for comfort.
