Trail Overview

Dawson Canyon Road in Naneum Ridge State Forest is a great introductory off-road route that gradually transitions from an easy forest drive into a more engaging climb. The lower section is a well-maintained logging road, wide, smooth, and accessible for most high-clearance vehicles. As you gain elevation, the road narrows and becomes rockier with occasional ruts and loose surfaces, especially higher up. In winter, this upper section can hold considerable snow, and in spring, lingering mud can slow progress and add a bit of challenge. The real reward comes as you climb, with expanding views across the surrounding hills and into the Kittitas Valley. Pull-offs along the way offer great spots to take in the scenery or watch for wildlife like deer and elk. The area is also ideal for dispersed camping, and there are plenty of opportunities for side trips such as short hikes along nearby ridgelines, hunting access in season, and quiet spots for wildlife viewing. Whether you are out for a quick scenic drive or a full day exploring the forest roads branching off the main route, Dawson Canyon delivers a solid mix of accessibility and adventure.
