Trail Overview

This scenic off-road trail through Columbia National Wildlife Refuge offers a mix of packed dirt, loose gravel, and some mildly rutted sections, making it a great route for almost any type of vehicle. While not overly technical, the trail can become muddy after rain, adding a bit of a challenge. Expect breathtaking views of dramatic basalt cliffs, seasonal wetlands, and rolling shrub-steppe terrain. This unique landscape was sculpted by the cataclysmic Ice Age floods, which carved deep channels and exposed layers of volcanic rock thousands of years ago. The result is a rugged, otherworldly terrain filled with coulees, buttes, and erratic boulders left behind by glacial meltwater. Wildlife sightings are common--keep an eye out for sandhill cranes, mule deer, and even bald eagles. In spring, wildflowers add bursts of color to the landscape. A peaceful, remote ride perfect for those looking to explore Eastern Washington's fascinating geology and rich wildlife habitat.

History

Established in 1964 as part of the Columbia Basin Project, the refuge was created to provide habitat for migratory birds and other wildlife. The extensive irrigation systems from the project transformed the arid landscape into a patchwork of agricultural fields, wetlands, and lakes, supporting a diverse ecosystem. Today, the refuge is an essential stopover for thousands of waterfowl during seasonal migrations. Visitors can spot sandhill cranes, Canada geese, and numerous species of ducks, while raptors and songbirds soar above the basalt cliffs. In addition to its ecological importance, the area offers a glimpse into the powerful forces that shaped the Pacific Northwest, making it a destination rich in both natural and cultural history.
