Trail Overview

Hite Hollow is located in the George Washington National Forest, west of Staunton, VA. It's a basic trail that offers outstanding views of the surrounding area. The trail is mainly rock and dirt and has several switchbacks that take you up the ridge line. Many of these switchbacks offer stunning views. During winter months there isn't much wildlife or vegetation present, but during spring and summer months one can expect to see the full range of flora and fauna that is native to the Virginia mountains. Cell service is extremely spotty along the trail, so plan accordingly.

It was a beautiful sunny day. The views going up and down were amazing. Trail was dry. Some tight spots so pinstriping could be expected. Plenty of switchbacks and blind curves so watch out for dirt bike riders. If you drive straight through, you could do it under an hour.

Pretty easy forest road that gets a little rough at the top. The “huge tree” has been cut but is just wide enough for a full size truck to squeeze through. Came across another down tree but was able to clear it with a hand saw. Very scenic once you crest the summit and come down towards route 42.

Two small trees down, I was able to hop them on a motorcycle but they would have to be moved for a truck. The first tree is down about 2 miles in before the first switchback when going east to west. The second one is near the top.

Mostly a basic dirt fire road with some very minor bumpy spots. Great views and nice elevation changes.

Trail was in normal good condition. It was partially obstructed in 3 places with downed trees but I cleared to a full size 4x4 width so no obstructions now. Really nice trail, great views in winter, and tops out at 3200 feet of elevation.
