Trail Overview

This class 4 Vermont road starts as a deceptively normal dirt road skirting the northern slope of The Dome. Eventually, the occasional house or trailer stops, and the challenge begins. A mostly rocky track rolls through wooded valleys cut by babbling streams and over hills strewn with blue and red quartzite boulders, among other interesting geology. Historic engineering is evidenced by culverts riveted together from short thick steel tubes.

Difficulty

Though seemingly innocuous at both ends of the trail, the center section is extremely rocky, with some boulders up to 18 inches. Some erosion control berms are extreme and may lead to grinding your undercarriage.

ALL that the guy before me said (LOL). I wasn't expecting this to be harder than I thought. The Pic definitely does NOT describe the loose rock and the slippy/humid terrain. As you start, it looks pretty settled, with some loose rocks but nothing scary. As you go further in, you notice that it gets narrower and rockier. I have a '04 4Runner with a 2 inch lift and stock size wheels and tires (265/70/17 all Terrain) i didn't go half way and I chickened out!!! I had my 16 y/o son and helped me spot. And I had to turn back. To justify my chicken feathers i didn't have a winch, jack or spare parts if needed. But if the guy before me did it on his STOCK 4R, I could have... I will not be able to sleep anymore LOL.. also, there were a couple of Atv RZRs that passed me, I asked if I was ok and they smiled, and said "I would turn back" but i thought they were just kidding. Another guy said "you should be alright". so I went for it.... good luck guys. I think i would have made it.

Took this trail in my stock height 2008 4Runner SR5 4WD, and I didn’t know what to expect. Started around 9:30pm and didn’t finish until 11pm in the dark. I recommend you have 32 inch tires. Mine had 30 inch tires with stock height. I scraped my frame, exhaust, and side steps multiple times on big rocks. Most of the clearance only needed two more inches. Secondly, I only used 4Hi for the whole trail. I didn’t need to use 4Lo or the Center Diff Lock which I could have. I also recommend having a spotter.

Trail per OnX description but read it carefully. There are some challenging sections. I was scouting for a trail to bring some new drivers in near stock rigs. This is probably not it.

Great day, saw some wildlife. Fun test of the new project vehicle. Fair amount of loose rocks.

I started at the north end of the trail and turned off at Risky Ranch. Start off at a dirt road but evolved into a pretty rocky trail. Fun trail but was running short on time to finish the whole thing.
