Trail Overview

Non-Resident OHV permits apply to ATVs, UTVs, and dirt bikes. Plated street-legal vehicles typically do not need one on legal motorized routes. Winter Camp Ridge is a scenic backcountry route that leads to the boundary of Arches National Park through a changing mix of classic desert terrain. The trail begins on hard-packed dirt before transitioning into sand, with the surface becoming rockier as elevation increases. Most of the route is made up of sand or dirt, but several sections of exposed slickrock and slab give it a more traditional Moab-style feel. Near the final half mile, you will reach a gate that can appear to mark the end of legal travel, but the route does continue beyond it. Be sure to open the gate, pass through, and close it behind you. Shortly after, the most technical feature appears: a moderate slickrock climb on roughly a 15-degree slope that requires steady traction and controlled throttle. Along the way, the trail passes unusual rock formations and broad desert views before ending in a grassy open area near the park boundary. A single rock formation stands near the end as a final landmark. Do not cross the ladder at the gate, as that area is under restoration.
