Trail Overview

Dropping from the southwest head of Water Hollow (FS 10168), the road funnels between bright aspen and tall fir before unwinding downhill toward open benches of sage. The tread is native dirt with scattered loose rock and intermittent rutting; a few cuts reach 14 inches and can tip rigs off-camber--engaging but not punishing. Watch for occasional downed limbs after wind, and a short shelf section with mild exposure and great fall color. Along the northeast stretch, a range gate with a narrow cattle-guard bypass pinches the corridor--full-width rigs may need to open and re-latch the gate. Leave gates as you find them: if it's closed, open only to pass and close it again; if it's open, leave it open. The final approach holds unavoidable water. In spring runoff, it can flow shallowly across the road (depth and width vary with snowmelt), while in the late season, it settles into a stagnant, pond-like puddle. Roll in slowly, check depth when flows are high, and stay on the firmest center line to minimize rutting. Cell service is spotty in the hollow but improves on the open benches.
