Trail Overview

This is a small hunting trail that cuts through the mountains to Avon Pass. It's very narrow in several spots, which makes passing other vehicles near impossible. It's mainly used by 4-wheelers and hunters. The trail is only open from July 15th to November 15th. It goes through private land, so if you want the trail to stay open, treat it with the utmost respect and stay on the trail!

Difficulty

The trail is easy, but uneven and rutted. It has the potential for loose rocks and sandy washes. Water crossings are less than a foot deep. There is also potential for mud holes and trail obstacles up to 12 inches, including ledges and short, steep grades. The roads are typically one vehicle wide.

There is a closed gate with what appears to be a new lock and chains on it and a large no trespassing sign. Unknown if this is seasonal/temporary or permanent.

The trail was a fun drive from Mantua to Avon. It was mostly dry with a few areas of loose rock, but nothing a typical 4x4 vehicle couldn't handle. The trail is definitely only wide enough for one vehicle for most of its length.

Beautiful trail. However if entering from the west there are some very rough rocky sliding uphills that you need to have plenty of clearance and some history with off-roading to make it

East side of the trail is nice. The west side is narrow and pretty rough in spots. There were a couple of slopes covered with softball sized rocks where I was glad to be going down.

Very sketchy taking my new Land Cruiser on this trail. A one mile section contained steep grade with lots of large rocks and sharp switchbacks. Would be great on a side by side. Not so much my brand new stock Land Cruiser.

We tried to come through the Avon side last night but the gate was closed so we thought we would look at the Mantua side today and see how far the gate was. It wasn’t too far and it was closed as well. Maybe next weekend!

Open from Avon trail side. Most of the trail is easy but as you go through trees you will come up to a section of really steep grade and large large loose rocks that we really struggled to come back up. Got stuck quite a few times and we’re in fear our atv would flip and my husband dropped his bike a few times because the rocks are so big and loose. Be aware cause once you go down it you have no choice but to go back up it as all the other trails around are private property.

Says it will open July 15, this is just the gate on the mantua end. I think you can still get up 3 mile Canyon off the Avon pass
