Trail Overview

This is an awesome drive. You will need a high clearance vehicle due to rocks, but 4x4 is not necessary. This road gets very tight and very high and if you aren't experienced in off-road driving, or if serious heights worry you, this probably is not the road for you. If you are ok with that then this can be a very fun afternoon or even night drive. There are several different turn offs but as long as you stay on what looks like the main road and continue upward then you are going the right way. This road is heavily used by ATVs and trucks, and it gets very dusty. From the top you can see Salt Lake through most of the Wasatch Front, Huntsville and into Cache Valley. On a clear day, you can see parts of Utah, Idaho, Nevada and Wyoming. At night, it is very cool to see all the lights of Salt Lake and Logan. This is a great road to see wildlife and is famous in Utah for its herd of mountain goats. Could be impassable with snow during winter.

Typical conditions for this road. It's passable all the way to the upper plateau gate, which opens July 15th. The sand switchbacks near the top were badly eroded from what looks like SxS tires. Peaceful fun easy ride.

Drove up to find a dispersed camping spot and found a closed and locked gate.

Last comment made me think it’s open but the gate is closed, you can’t go anywhere but the stashing parking lot.

Trail is open and pretty clear until nearing the top. There were some snow patches and ice throughout the trail it wasn’t until towards the top there was a huge Ice patch that caused us to turn around.

Trail still passable. A little bit of snow here and there but not bad. Pretty muddy with some decent sized puddles.

The trail was in great condition! I've heard that it's typically dusty, but we went right after some rain and it was perfect. We encountered a few puddles, but nothing serious. The sunset views were awesome! At one area you can see over into Eden and back to Cache valley at the same before crossing over the ridge to look down into Willard, and that is a cool view. We passed a lot of cool camp areas, and will definitely be returning. One tip, it took much longer than we accounted for, and we had friends do it who said the same for them. I'd say give yourself an extra 30 minutes or so, it's a bit farther out than we thought!
