Trail Overview

South Mytoge is an ideal route for offroaders seeking scenic access to the south and east sides of Fish Lake in Wayne County, Utah, offering spectacular views of alpine landscapes and convenient access to primitive camping spots. This 6.3-mile dirt trail begins near State Route 25 and is relatively well-maintained around the south end of the lake, where it connects to various established campgrounds and dispersed campsites. As the route winds eastward towards the lake's rim, the trail climbs through forests of pine, aspen, and cedar, ranging from a starting elevation of 8,761 feet up to a peak of 9,785 feet. Navigating this section provides panoramic views of the water and surrounding mountains, but drivers should remain alert as the trail surface becomes rougher and can become extremely slick and difficult during inclement weather. With a technical rating of 3, the trail presents minor obstacles including ruts, small washes crossing the roadway, and short, steep grades that require high-clearance vehicles or four-wheel-drive capability to navigate safely. SxSs, SUVs, and trucks are well-suited for this journey, which features a cumulative elevation gain of approximately 667 feet. Along the way, travelers will pass notable landmarks such as Cabin Spring and Dog Spring, both of which serve as great stopping points to look for local wildlife like elk, deer, bear, and cougar. The route integrates with several nearby forest roads and trails, making it a perfect connecting segment for a full day of backcountry exploration in the Fish Lake National Forest.
