Trail Overview

Soapstone Pass Trail is best for people looking to camp and seeking an easy way to get deeper into the Uintas Mountains. This road crosses from Mirror Lake Highway (150) down to 35 through the Uintas at Soapstone Pass. The road is mostly dirt, with climbs up switchbacks through Aspen forests into the highlands. The highland meadows often feature wildflowers, as well as long views of the surrounding Uintas to the north. The area near 150 also features a multitude of dispersed camping opportunities, including spots accessible by RV trailers. Several more challenging trails can be accessed off Soapstone Pass, including Cold Springs Road which goes deep into the Uintas.

Difficulty

In dry weather, this road is doable in 2WD high-clearance. However, the dirt is prone to washing out, which elevates the potential difficulty of the trail.

I drove this road approaching from highway 35 on Saturday (9/28) and as of Sunday (9/30) the Yellow Lake Fire has spread and closed highway 35 as well as the Soapstone Basin area. The bridge on the Mirror Lake Highway is still being rebuilt. The fall colors were amazing, but sadly the road is closed now due to the fire.
