Post Road Trail

The Post Road Trail is an offroad route offering a steady climb through the beautiful transition zones of Utah's Fishlake National Forest. Spanning ~7.4 miles, this trail is perfect for stock SUVs, high-clearance four-wheel-drive vehicles, and OHVs looking to explore the canyon country north of Salina Canyon. The journey begins near Interstate 70 at an elevation of 5,784 feet, quickly leaving the highway behind as it winds through sagebrush flats dotted with cedar and scrub oak. As the trail climbs, the dry valley vegetation gives way to stands of aspen and pine, while the surrounding hills showcase red soils rich in iron. The route ascends toward Steves Mountain, reaching a maximum elevation of 8,544 feet and delivering stunning views of the surrounding peaks, including Cedar Mountain and Bull Valley Mountain. With a technical rating of 3, the trail is relatively easy to navigate, making it highly accessible for novice offroaders and experienced drivers alike. The primary surface consists of dirt, with only small rocky sections and occasional ruts to negotiate. Over the course of the drive, vehicles will tackle a cumulative elevation gain of 3,146 feet, which is manageable for most standard high-clearance 4x4s without specialized modifications. Because of the high elevation near the summit, the route is best driven from late spring through late autumn, as winter snows can make the upper sections impassable. Offroaders can access the trail via an underpass located along the Interstate 70 frontage road, roughly 1 mile east of the Gooseberry exit (Exit 63).
