Trail Overview

Mount Baldy Road is an adventurous 4.4-mile unpaved trail in the Manti-La Sal National Forest, perfect for intermediate drivers seeking scenic high-elevation views and rugged terrain on the north and west sides of Mount Baldy. Rising to a peak elevation of 9,642 feet, this route serves as a gateway to the spectacular Wasatch Plateau, where primitive campers can find a few suitable spots near the northern terminus that accommodate full-size vehicles and trailers. The unmaintained road holds a technical rating of 5, making high-clearance four-wheel-drive vehicles, high-clearance SUVs, and capable SxSs highly recommended for anyone attempting the trek. The trail consists of a highly uneven dirt and rock surface, presenting drivers with off-camber sections, deep ruts, and loose rocks with obstacles measuring up to 1.5 feet in height. Along with navigating small washouts and short, steep grades, travelers will experience approximately 505 feet of cumulative elevation gain and 790 feet of descent. Due to the high altitude and natural soil composition, this track becomes extremely slick and nearly impassable during wet conditions, meaning visits are best planned during the dry summer and early autumn months.
