Trail Overview

Miner's Ridge Overlook Trail is a 7-mile out-and-back adventure that climbs steadily over 1000 feet into the hills above the valley, blending scenic terrain, historical intrigue, and just enough challenge to keep things exciting. The trail begins wide, with a mix of sand and gravel, and narrows as it winds through a forest of cedar and other native trees. Along the route, you'll spot old mining remnants, including rusted iron machinery that hint at the area's industrial past--worth stopping for a closer look or a quick photo. The first mile is relatively smooth and easy, with a trail rating of 1. At around mile 1.8, the difficulty increases as the trail becomes noticeably narrower and more technical. A steep climb with a rain-washed section can be tricky, especially in wet conditions, but remains passable with care and proper vehicle setup. From here, the trail rolls up and down through a mix of sand and small rock, offering changing terrain and ever-improving views. At mile 2.5, the trail opens up to stunning vistas--a sweeping view of the valley below and the mountains above. The final stretch features a return to sandy terrain, with a steep off-camber section around mile 3. The trail tops out at 6751 feet. This spot, marked by roots and mud, along with the last sandy hill climb to the top, earns the trail its peak difficulty rating. The ascent is engaging and winding, while the descent is rewarded with breathtaking downhill views of the surrounding landscape.

Difficulty

This trail is mostly rated 1-2, with a smooth and scenic start. However, mile 1.8 and beyond introduces steep grades, washouts, and off-camber sections--making it a solid 3 in wet conditions. The muddy, root-covered section at mile 3 and the final climb to the overlook can be particularly slick after rain. High clearance and 4WD are recommended, especially for those venturing past the halfway point. While suitable for confident intermediate drivers, caution is advised when wet.
