Trail Overview

The Long Valley Foothills trail is a 7.5-mile predominantly sand track that runs along the base of the western Sand Mountain cliffs. This trail is rated 4 of 10 due to deep sand tracks and sandhill obstacles. The first stop along this trail is an old pit house of unknown origin. Continuing on the trail follows the base of the Sand Mountain cliffs with spectacular views of cragged rock formations and deep gorges. The trail proceeds through deep washes and has several steep sand hill climbs, some of which have bypasses.

Difficulty

Trail consisting of loose rock, dirt, and sand with some slickrock surfaces. Some erosion; washes, gulches, and rock steps no higher than 18". Tall tires (33" plus) and a limited slip would be a plus. 4WD is required. Enhanced suspension travel and good ground clearance are helpful. Good driving skills are a plus.

Trail was empty, all obstacles were doable in an FJC with a 2.5" lift and 33" AT tires. No bypasses were used. There was only one maybe two spots where I felt that the lift was needed. The trail becomes convoluted with some frequency due to lots of single tracks crossing the area. This was a good trail to teach beginner level family on, though there were no opportunities for a recovery.

Lots of whoops and deep sand.

The trail was fun overall. We only completed about half of it due to our longer wheelbase and some really narrow rock obstacles. If you're in a truck/longer wheel-based vehicle, it gets pretty tight and almost too narrow to make the turns. Luckily, there are a few bypasses to get to the main road if you want to exit off the trail like we did. The sand parts are super fun, but try to get there in the morning since the sand is almost impassible in some sections when it's hot.
