Trail Overview

Plan on a long approach to the start of this very difficult trail (via trail 70, 74, or 75). This challenging Maze trail rewards riders with exceptional views of rock spires, including the "Doll House" clusters at the end of the route. Camp overnight for stunning sunsets and sunrises and enjoy a hike to the Colorado River. Make sure to read up on Maze area regulations.

Difficulty

This trail has some good-sized ledges, up to 3 feet tall, but most obstacles are 18 inches or smaller. All major obstacles have rocks and boulders stacked for ramps, but a high clearance 4x4 is still required. Due to the remote location, carrying extra fuel is strongly recommended.

This is a beautiful trail in an incredibly remote area. It’s a haul from the ranger station so plan for a long day (5-6ish hours from the ranger station). The most technical section is just after Teapot Rock (where the route gets squiggly). There are a few decent ledges and obstacles, but there are a lot of rocks stacked making them much easier. Stock high clearance 4x4s (Bronco and Jeep wrangler) on 35s made it through just fine. The dollhouse area is beautiful, with several hikes in the area. Please stay on the trails and pack everything out so this area can be open for many years to come.

Came in through poison springs and crossed at the intersection. Trail was normal dry conditions. Did not see anyone until we got to the wall and every camp was full. Trail obstacles were easy. The stacked rocks make the trail more like a 4/5. No way a 7. This is a very long day plan accordingly know how much gas to bring and know how long you Need to get in and to your next stop. Also when you see oncoming traffic pull over stop figure out where you need to be. Don’t just keep coming. The ranger gave you instructions that need to be followed when passing so we don’t break the crust and damage the sides of the trail. Also check out time at all camps is 10am. Pack out everything you packed in. This is such a privilege to get to go out here.

The trail is in decent condition. Don't get me wrong. This is NOT an easy trail and one of the most remote trails in the country. Extra gas, high clearance 4x4 required. Do not underestimate the challlenge and commitment needed for most of the entire length of the trail. The current rating is totally wrong. It is not a 7/10. There arent obstacles 7 feet tall. Let alone 5 feet tall (a 6/10). There are some just over 2 feet tall if you really try the hardest line. But most of the obstacles are up to 18 inches with a few around 2 feet but can easily be done with a much shorter line. We went with three lifted trucks on 32, 33 and 34s. Two of us with extensive 4x4 experience. It still took is 7 hours to get out there helping the third run the smart lines. 5 hours coming back knowing the trail.
