Trail Overview

Jacobs Chair Road is a 13-mile point-to-point trail rated 3 of 10 located in San Juan County. Jacobs Chair is named for the "chair-like" Wingate Sandstone formation to the trail's north. The trail is open to all motor vehicles, however, several sections narrow to the width of a single full-size vehicle. A trailhead parking area large enough for several vehicles with trailers is available just off Highway 95. The trail consists of hard-packed dirt with multiple gullies to cross. These gullies will slow travel considerably. But with the views available, travel will be slow anyway. Rocks may occasionally slide down the mountain and partially block the road, requiring very tricky maneuvering. This is an extremely remote area, so plan your trip accordingly. There are no services for 70 miles in any direction. The trail is marked with standard brown Carsonite signage with the number 1. The trail intersects with Short Canyon Trail which is a 15-mile trail to the north leading back to Highway 95 and about 4 miles north of the trailhead. Travelers will find signs at both trailheads reminding them to remain on designated trails. The closest medical help (over an hour from the trailhead) is the San Juan Hospital in Monticello.
