Trail Overview
Griffin Top (FS 31377) is a 2.1-mile (4.2-mile round trip) out-and-back trail rated 3 of 10 located within the Escalante Ranger District of the Dixie National Forest. Griffin Top is a spur trail of the Great Western Trail (Griffin Top Section) that is open year-round to all forms of motorized and non-motorized travel. This spur trail travels through alpine meadows and Pinyon Pine. The end of the trail is at the edge overlook between Griffin Top Peak and Mud Springs Point. There are no major obstacles on this trail, and any 2 or 4WD high clearance vehicle should not have any issues during the dry season. The entire trail is well over 10,000 feet in elevation and will be covered in snow from early winter through late spring and possibly into the early summer. The low-lying areas will generally retain water until late fall. The overlook at the end of the trail provides a view of the Hurricane Hollow below and the Mount Dutton range to the west. Dispersed camping is allowed within 150 feet of the road, offering either wooded areas or open alpine meadows. Do not expect to have cell phone service anywhere along this trail. The nearest basic necessities can be found in Bryce Canyon City to the south and major services in Cedar City to the west.
Difficulty
Trail consisting of loose rocks, dirt, and sand with some slickrock surfaces, mud holes possible, no steps higher than 12 inches. 4WD may be required; aggressive tires are a plus.
