Trail Overview

Non-Resident OHV permits apply to ATVs, UTVs, and dirt bikes. Plated street-legal vehicles typically do not need one on legal motorized routes. This route is a very easy gravel drive that provides access to the Good Water East trailhead while offering gradually improving views of the surrounding San Rafael Swell. The road is generally smooth and well-traveled, making it suitable for most vehicles, including many 2WD cars in dry conditions. As you travel farther in, the landscape opens up to scenic views of Sid’s Mountain and the San Rafael River corridor, enhancing the overall experience. At the end of the route, you’ll find a developed trailhead with vaulted toilets and a large parking area that can accommodate multiple vehicles. This is a great spot to transition from driving to hiking or mountain biking, as the road continues as a non-motorized route beyond this point.

History

The San Rafael Swell is a massive geologic uplift shaped by erosion into canyons, mesas, domes, and reefs. Many roads in the region were later used for ranching, mining, and energy exploration, creating the access routes travelers still use today.
