Trail Overview

The Flint Trail takes drivers down a steep descent of tight, narrow switchbacks to a narrow shelf road. Take the road along the high ridge and enjoy the scenic views. You'll have the option to circle back in Highway 95 via Trails 74 or 75, or turn around the way you came. Plan ahead by bringing gas, since you will be far from a station, and read up on Maze area regulations.

Difficulty

Moderate. Switchbacks are very steep and narrow but, when dry, are generally passable by high-clearance, 4x4 stock vehicles with low-range gearing. Difficult or impassable after storms. Bentonite clay-surface road along ridge after Waypoint 04 is dangerously slippery when wet. Proceed with caution.

History

In 1973, a small camping trailer served as the Hans Flat Ranger Station. The present-day station was established in 1988. Rangers live here year around in nearby living quarters. Rangers are very knowledgable and helpful. Road conditions are posted inside. The station is open every day of the year except Thanksgiving, Christmas and New Year's Day.

The upper portion of this trail is well maintained. The switchbacks get a little more rocky and narrow, there is not much if any room to pass. If you’re coming from the top, be sure to stop at the overlook and check for uphill traffic, which has the right of way. After the switchbacks, the road is a little rough, but nothing technical.

Upper section is well maintained from Hans flats Ranger station to switchbacks. I didn’t go down the switchbacks and continued to happy valley. Got some photos showing the switchbacks below from the lookout.

Flit trail is a beautiful trail certainly the connector trail to everything. Switchbacks are overwhelming at first. But take it slow & pay attention. Really need to take a moment at the top and at the bottom to check for traffic already on the way up or down. Not much padding room on the switchbacks passable in a few areas but better to check traffic before you head up/down. Too bad there’s not a designated radio channel to call out as you start in either direction. Regardless do your due diligence before you start. The trail is a narrow shelf road rocky with scattered loose rocks so 4x4 is your friend. Does have a couple of wash outs but stay on wall side and it’s fine. Take your time on switchbacks use a spotter or back up can as needed.

If you're coming in from the Hans Flat Ranger Station the road is very tame until you get to the Happy Canyon junction. Any stock vehicle can go that far. But the switchbacks are no joke! It's comparable to Hardscrabble on White Rim. If you're coming up like I did you'll need 4 lo and a spotter or good bumper cam. The road was recently serviced so it's in good condition, but I'd hate to see what bad condition looks like.

3/10 difficulty, no crazy or fun obstacles. Definitely stock vehicle with 4lo worthy. The switchback-ey part is way over sold and it’s not tight or dangerous at all, easily fit a full size vehicle down; the hairpins are pretty tight but it can be done. Be careful about camping regulations, very pretty trail would do again.
