Trail Overview
D3041 is a rugged connector route linking Blue Hills Road with Ruby Ranch Road through a remote and barren stretch of high desert terrain. The trail winds across rolling hills and open prairie, following a soft brown dirt two-track framed by colorful mesas and distant desert backdrops. While the climbs are not especially steep, the sandy bases can reduce traction and make momentum important. The biggest challenge comes from multiple washouts and deep cross-cut trenches ranging from roughly 12 to 24 inches, which demand careful tire placement along with strong approach and departure angles. Sections of soft sand and scattered rock add to the difficulty, making four-wheel drive, durable tires, and good ground clearance highly recommended. Despite the harsher terrain, the route offers a quiet sense of isolation and wide-open scenery that rewards prepared travelers. At the western end near Ruby Ranch Road, abundant dispersed camping provides plenty of room for RVs, trailers, and large groups looking for a spacious desert basecamp.
Difficulty
D3041 is a moderate route due to repeated washouts, deep 12 to 24-inch cross-cut trenches, soft sand, and occasional rocky sections. The hills are not especially steep, but sandy climbs can reduce traction and make vehicle setup more important. High clearance 4x4s are strongly recommended.
