Trail Overview

Non-Resident OHV permits apply to ATVs, UTVs, and dirt bikes. Plated street-legal vehicles typically do not need one on legal motorized routes. This rugged 4WD route winds through sandy washes, climbs over rolling hills before reaching a spectacular overlook above Cordova Canyon. Along the drive, you'll pass through colorful desert terrain with sweeping views of layered rock formations and open canyon country. Several large washouts along the trail provide optional spots to test suspension flex and articulation, while bypasses allow less aggressive drivers to continue without tackling the roughest lines. The route also carries a strong sense of history, with remnants from the 1950s uranium boom including the Parco Mines, Yellow Bird Mine, and views into Mine Draw. At the end, a standout campsite overlooks the canyon with distant views of the La Sal Mountains, Fisher Towers, and even Arches National Park on clear days.

Difficulty

This route is best suited for vehicles with high clearance and 4WD due to sandy washes, uneven terrain, and several larger washouts that can test suspension travel. The most difficult obstacles are optional because bypasses are available, keeping the overall rating moderate rather than difficult. Drivers should still expect loose sand, off-camber sections, small ledges, and erosion that may worsen after storms. Dry conditions make the trail manageable for most capable stock 4WD vehicles with careful tire placement, while wet weather can quickly increase the challenge.

History

This region is closely tied to the uranium and vanadium mining booms that shaped eastern Utah in the mid-1900s. During the Cold War, demand for uranium surged, bringing roads, claims, camps, and small industrial sites into the desert. Evidence of that era still remains today in the form of old structures, fenced or barricaded mine openings, tailings areas, and abandoned access roads. These remnants are part of the area's story look, photograph, and respect them without disturbing anything.
