Coal Canyon Road is a 9.8-mile point-to-point trail rated 3 of 10 located in Emery and Grand Counties. This is generally a destination trail with visitors stopping at the 7.6-mile point and visiting the Coal Canyon Petroglyphs. This relatively wide dirt road extends from just outside Green River into the Book Cliffs region. The trail ends at the intersection with Horse Canyon Road and the boundary of the Floy Canyon Wilderness Study Area. There are no significant obstacles on this road, and it is generally (during good weather) suitable for any 2 or 4WD high clearance vehicle. The first 6 miles cross open farmlands before entering Coal Canyon. The Coal Canyon Petroglyphs are located about 7.6 miles from the southern trailhead. The site contains a large number of petroglyphs clustered around a single large boulder within just a few feet of the trailhead. A short trail leads from there to 3 or 4 other boulders where there are a few more petroglyphs. The trailhead is located at 39.04403, -110.03524. The petroglyphs are located at: 39.04616, -110.03521, 39.04759, -110.03644, 39.04796, -110.03598, and a nice panel with a snake 39.04863, -110.03624. Cell phone service is intermittent up to the petroglyph site, and then is lost entering the canyon. The nearest services are located in Green River.

Difficulty
Trail consisting of loose rocks, dirt, and sand with some slickrock surfaces, mud holes possible, no steps higher than 12 inches. 4WD may be required; aggressive tires are a plus.
