Trail Overview
Canyonlands Overlook Trail offers a rewarding and scenic journey through a dynamic desert landscape, ending in one of the most breathtaking panoramic vistas in Utah. The trail stretches roughly 6.5 miles one way, with a character that shifts noticeably the closer you get to the rim. The first 5.5 miles are relatively mellow and suitable for high-clearance 2WD or 4WD vehicles. This section traverses rolling desert terrain made up of sand, dirt, and intermittent slickrock, with wide stretches that wind through open country. Occasional shallow dips and rock patches may be present, but this portion is primarily easygoing and scenic. After mile 5.5, the trail tightens and intensity ramps up quickly. The final mile is a 4 out of 5 on the SEE difficulty scale and demands 4WD, high clearance, and experienced line choice. Expect a technical mix of bedrock ledges, abrupt drops, embedded rock ramps, and occasional standing water in natural rock basins. Sections of off-camber slickrock and ledgy shelves require precise tire placement, and traction may vary depending on recent weather. Campsites are scattered near the rim, offering quiet and remote spots to take in the high desert silence under expansive night skies. There are no amenities, and no water is available, so plan accordingly. Cell service is nonexistent once you're a few miles in--offline maps are a must. The trail ends at a dramatic overlook perched above sheer canyon walls, offering views rivaling those in nearby national parks but without the crowds. For those equipped and willing to navigate the final mile, Canyonlands Overlook Trail is an unforgettable off-road and camping experience.
Difficulty
This trail has varying terrain, and a series of hills and ledges, coupled with tight turns about 5.5 miles in until the end/overlook, make proper line choice essential. The trail also narrows in this section, with trees to navigate as well. Caution is urged; body damage is possible.
