Trail Overview

Closed from October to June. This is a great drive that takes you up and over the Oquirrh Mountains between Herriman and Tooele, Utah. This is a perfect place for an evening with great views. This area is particularly beautiful in the fall with many colors in the trees. You will also get a great birdseye view of one of the largest mines on earth. The Oquirrh Mountains are west of Salt Lake City and see far less traffic than the Wasatch Range across the valley. The drive can easily be done in any direction, and in most vehicles. There is a short side road to the top of West Mountain where you can look down and into the Kennecott Copper Mine.

As others said this is paved up to the overlook road from the Herriman side. The overlook trail was also open, that is also 1/10 in terms of difficulty. Saw two sedans up at the overlook for reference.

Yeah, no, this paved road is not open to dirt bikes or ATVs. There is a sign at the road gate that says no off-road vehicles. Found that out after getting there.

Easy trail. Only the switchbacks on the west side are gravel and are washboarded but the rest is paved. $5 toll fee on the tooele side. I’d you come in from the est and just go to the peak it seems like you don’t need the toll

Paved on the Butterfield (Herriman) side, dirt on the Middle Canyon (Tooele). The dirt on the Tooele side is graded very nice. Dusty, but flat. Basically a 1 rating but it has been rutted in the past so 2 is a safe estimate. The trail up to the mine overlook from the peak was still gated (closed). Rio Tinto controls that.
