Trail Overview

Big Flat begins just off Highway 12 and quickly transports you into a quiet expanse of BLM land, where large meadows dotted with cedar trees stretch toward the horizon. Be sure to close the cattle gate behind you on both entry and exit--this is active grazing land, and you may encounter cattle along the way. The first 3 miles consist mostly of hard-packed dirt and are accessible to 2WD vehicles with good tires in dry conditions. After that, the trail transitions into sandier and rockier terrain with deeper ruts and a few slightly off-camber sections. 4x4 is recommended from this point on. As you climb higher, you're rewarded with stunning views into the Phipps Death Hollow Wilderness Study Area, an awe-inspiring canyon landscape with sheer cliffs and rugged beauty.
