Trail Overview

If you're looking for a location for the best "color" viewing in the fall or the prettiest green aspens in the spring, this is it! Just a little over a mile and a half of easy dirt trail, climbing nearly a thousand feet up from 8748. In the springtime, when the aspens are leafing out, the trail may be muddy in places as the runoff comes down from the Alunite Ridge in the Fishlake National Forest. When we rode the trail, it ended where our track ended because a company was up there doing some work, and their equipment blocked any trail going further up into the forest. However, if they're not a permanent contractor working there, perhaps you will be able to go further along the Alunite Ridge later on. Near the bottom of the trail you go by the Crown Pointe Lodge, and their sign says it's the Mt. Baldy Mining District of Piute County. Mining tunnels were used between 1882 and 1915 in this area. History reports that Tommy Knockers inhabited these tunnels. This area is rich in its mining history. We saw deer on this trail, squirrels, and birds. In February of 2023, Utah began enforcement of a new law, which requires an online education course for all off-roaders. The free course is available online. Google "Utah OHV Education Course," and the free test will pop up. It's an easy test that will only take 15-30 minutes, and it's required for all off-roaders, Jeeps, SXSs, dirt bikes, and ATVs. Kids under the age of 18 will have to take the Youth Education Test at the same site. After completing the test, print out the certificate to carry with you which shows you completed the course. We have taken it, and it's really no big deal. Good reminders about trail etiquette and trail preservation.

This trail is actually open all the way through as opposed to what is shown on the map. When I first attempted the trail southward, I encountered a busted up but open gate with No Trespassing signs on it, so I turned back. I drove around on the other trail and decided to come up from the other side to see if it was open... and it was. NO markings of No Trespassing or anything. IMO the best way to do this trail is southward, which is downhill. It can be quite steep in spots but road surface is good. Switchbacks are tight. You'll use a lot less gas going southbound.

As the trail description describes, “it may go on” from where this mapped trail terminates. Indeed it does, it goes all the way through to PST77. Unfortunately short of that goal we ran into deep snow and could not proceed. I’ve attached a picture that shows where we made it to headed north, and verified from the PST77 side that it does connect. It does however get a lot narrower and there are many places that if you encounter another vehicle someone is backing up. There are some interesting mining buildings on the section we extended to. No real obstacles other than some tight hairpins. Great trail, and I’m sure the aspens are stunning in the fall.
