Phelps Road

Phelps Road offers a peaceful and easy-going drive through the dense, towering pine forests of the Sam Houston National Forest, making it perfect for beginners, scenic cruisers, and those looking to escape into nature. Spanning approximately 2.2 miles, this well-maintained gravel route features very gentle elevation changes, ranging from 348 feet to 407 feet above sea level with a mild 65 feet of cumulative elevation gain. The corridor is framed by majestic loblolly pines and diverse hardwood trees, offering excellent opportunities for wildlife viewing, birdwatching, and photography. The straightforward terrain requires no specialized equipment, making it accessible to standard passenger vehicles, high-clearance two-wheel-drive vehicles, SxSs, and four-wheel-drive rigs alike under dry conditions. While the road is generally smooth and easy to traverse, visitors should remain cautious of occasional fallen trees and branches after storms, as well as slick, muddy conditions that can develop quickly during heavy Texas rains. The route serves as an excellent access point to broader recreational activities within the 163,045-acre national forest, including nearby segments of the Lone Star Hiking Trail and various primitive dispersed camping areas. Because the trail experiences mild seasonal variations, it is best enjoyed year-round, though spring and autumn offer the most comfortable temperatures for stepping out of the vehicle to explore the surrounding woods.
