Trail Overview

As you find yourself cruising down this road, you notice some very old portions of the Davy Crockett National Forest. Old Shady Grove Cemetery and New Zion Church have been generational landmarks in this area for quite some time, and this old dusty route is one of the best for sight-seeing and pleasure cruising. While there are some sizeable mud-holes that can fill with water, the road is often wide enough to miss them, however, the sections of this trail not elevated should be respected and treated with appropriate caution in the rain seasons. At the end of this road you'll find all natural gas wells that are still running and storing natural gas; one of the many resources that our National Forests still provide to us.

Difficulty

This road is a pleasure to drive when it's cold or hot, anywhere between that, it's typically raining and the land out here gets saturated quickly. The mud-holes can get as deep as 8 - 10 inches, and spread out to about 6 - 10 feet. So being careful and cautious through the rain seasons is the only real challenge to this trail.

History

This has been a route to collect natural gas for processing for decades. One of the selling points of the National Forests, and public lands in general, coming to Texas was the use for its multiple amazing resources.

I found the sign for the old Shady Grove cemetery followed the spur about 3/10 of a mile back and ran into a locked gate. Never saw the cemetery. The rest of the trail shows recent logging which created lots of side trails, but note that many of them have been blocked off with piles of brush.
