The route is a gravel road with expansive, flat vistas of the surrounding mountains and desert landscape, offering a scenic approach into the Big Bend region. It provides a gradual transition from the outside ranchlands into the more remote areas of the park.

On this road, you’ll find a mostly smooth gravel and hard-packed surface with occasional loose rock, washboard sections, and minor uneven areas. In dry conditions, it’s easy to drive with consistent traction. After rain, sections can become slick with mud or develop soft spots, especially in low-lying areas.
