Trail Overview

Trail 3, also known as Major Tom, is an approachable 0.9-mile off-road trail located within Adventure Off Road Park (AOP) in South Pittsburg, Tennessee, perfect for beginners and those looking for a scenic, relaxed drive. Featuring an elevation gain of roughly 266 feet and reaching a maximum elevation of 1,417 feet, this route is predominantly composed of hard-packed dirt that drains quickly after wet weather. Although rated a mild 3 out of 10, drivers should not underestimate the terrain, as minor obstacles like a flat shelf rock and scattered tree debris can catch low-clearance vehicles off guard. Standard four-wheel-drive vehicles, SxSs, and stock SUVs can comfortably navigate the route, but careful tire placement is key to avoid getting hung up on differentials. The trail kicks off from Trail 1 right at the bend and winds its way to an end at Trail 11, running nearly parallel to Trail 2. Along the way, riders will encounter Tom's Rock, named after AOP's original owner, which serves as a historic park icon and an excellent shaded gathering spot with ample parking. It is a highly recommended spot to shut off the motors, pull over, and enjoy lunch in the shade during the hot summer months. Because the route is located inside the private Adventure Off Road Park, an admission fee and waiver are required before hitting the trail, which is open year-round but best enjoyed from spring through autumn.

Difficulty

Trail 3 is mostly hard packed dirt, and does not hold mud very long, as the water runs off the mountain quickly. There is scattered tree debris, and one rock shelf that could catch you off guard. Otherwise, this trail is an excellent easy cruiser!

History

Trail 3 features Tom's Rock, a landmark named after Tom, the original owner of Adventure Off Road Park when the property first opened to the public. Initially established as a popular social gathering spot for trail riders, the rock has become a well-known park icon and key point of interest along this route.

Trail is open. It is a main trail at AOP. The previous trail report is not correct. The trail runs along the park boundary and there are trails that branch off of Trail 3 and lead to private property.
